Can we commit?
This question can be answered by:
- assessing alignment of the principles and potentials for organic agriculture with national and ministerial goals and objectives;
- affirming this assessment by building knowledge about organic farming and food systems;
- Accessing information about other government policies in support of organic agriculture and their impacts.
These three steps are facilitated by elements in this toolkit.
In addition, you may take into account:
- who would be your potential intra-governmental partners for a policy;
- whether there could be sufficient high-level support for committing to a policy;
- If there is potential to dedicate at least some financial resources to policy development and implementation.
The scope of the policy commitment may vary according to government resources and capacities, and to the stage of the organic sector’s development in your country. In lower resourced countries, a policy may include just a few actions – and the policy tree may initially be comparable to a seedling, which if properly tended, can grow over time. This toolkit provides some policy-making guidelines to suit various resource/capacity levels in government and the organic sector.
