“Stephen was, and is, beloved by his colleagues throughout SPC, the Pacific Island Countries and Territories and in the global organic community. We already miss the stories, the jokes, the insights and the photographic memory of details, but remain committed and determined to carry on the good work of building the Pacific organic Movement that Stephen so passionately, tirelessly and creatively built into POETCom, the peak body for the Organic Movement in the Pacific.”, said Mr Aiaz Hamid, Sea and Soil; POETCom Pioneer.
The organic movement has always thrived upon the passionate dedication of individuals who strive to make a positive impact on our environment and communities. In the vast tapestry of this movement, Stephen Hazelman’s name shines brightly as a pioneer and visionary.
In June 2023 we came to the news of Stephen moving on from his time at Pacific Organic and Ethical Trade Community (POETCom), and thus we would like to take a moment to reflect upon his remarkable journey and the unwritten chapters that lie ahead. Stephen Hazelman, the former Organic Systems Extension Officer at POETCom, has been a driving force in promoting sustainable agriculture and organic farming practices across the Pacific Region for the past twenty plus years. His dedication to this cause has been unwavering, and his impact immeasurable.
Through his work, he has not only supported the growth of the organic industry in the region but has also transformed countless lives by empowering local communities and uplifting their livelihoods. During his time at POETCom, Stephen spearheaded several crucial initiatives that have earned him the admiration and respect of his peers. He played a pivotal role in developing and implementing strategies to support organic farmers and businesses, providing them with the necessary resources and expertise to thrive in a competitive market.
Stephen’s expertise in organic systems has been instrumental in creating sustainable agricultural practices that preserve the delicate balance of our ecosystems. Stephen’s departure from POETCom to join Live and Learn, an Australian-based international NGO, marks the beginning of a new chapter in his journey. As their Technical Food Systems Advisor for 11 countries in Asia and the Pacific, Stephen’s expertise and knowledge will undoubtedly leave an indelible mark on the region.
