The newly established Max Dowedia Organic Learning Farm Centre in Nauru is nearly ready to open its centre to interested agricultural stakeholders, researchers and students. In the video below, Max speaks on the importance of organic farming in his small island nation. Working with the Pacific Organic Learning Farms Network (POLFN) Project under the Pacific Organic and Ethical Trading Community (POETCom) at the Pacific Community (SPC), Max believes that more farmers should take up backyard gardening using organic farming practices to promote agroecology and improve food security on the island.
Max’s message is clear – by practicing organic farming in their backyard gardens, Nauruans can not only contribute to the health and well-being of their families but also play a vital role in conserving the environment and ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.
In collaboration with the Department of Environmental Management and Agriculture (DEMA), the POLFN Project, supported by the Kiwa Initiative, was proud to partner up with Max Dowedia and launch the Nauru Organic Learning Farm Centre. POLFN Project Manager Timoci Nakalevu shares, “As Nauru continues to face challenges related to food security and climate change, Max’s vision of a community of organic farmers working together is both inspiring and achievable. With his dedication and expertise, he is paving the way for a more organic and sustainable future for Nauru.”
The Max Dowedia Organic Learning Farm is one of seven organic learning farms launched in 2023, within Nauru, Fiji, Tonga and the Solomon Islands. These organic learning farms will be a living laboratory to demonstrate the benefits of Nature-based Solutions such as agroecology and agroforestry and organic production methods and technologies.
